A Rare Case of Bilateral Serous Retinal Detachment
Abstract
Serous retinal detachment due to choroidal ischemia occurs in less than 1 percent of patients with pre-eclampsia. We report a case of a 33-year-old multigravida at 30 weeks of gestation who came to us for bilateral sudden visual loss with no history of pregnancy induced hypertension or seizures. On examination her best corrected visual acuity was 5-60 and 1-60 in the right eye and left eye respectively. She had bilateral serous retinal detachment and her BP was 230-140 mmHg. She was immediately referred to an obstetric setup where she was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia and underwent an emergency caesarean section with delivery of a healthy child. There was spontaneous resolution of the serous retinal detachments with good recovery of vision, post-partum. Prompt diagnosis and management in this case saved the eyes, the mother and the child. Further the patient has subsequently developed chronic hypertension and retinopathy changes.
