AN UNEXPECTED DIAGNOSIS OF OCHRONOSIS

LAKSHMIKANTH M E

Abstract

This paper is on a rare presentation of ochronosis of the knee joint which was diagnosed intra-operatively. Both the biochemical tests done for degenerative conditions and those done preoperatively to assess patient status do not include homogentistic acid estimation in urine. Homogentistic acid can deposit in the cartilage and cause degeneration warranting replacement of the joint for example the knee joint and spring a surprise. It is necessary to include testing for homogentistic acid in urine as a routine in all conditions of degeneration.
