An Unusual Case Of Pigmented Villonodular Synovitis Of Knee In Paediatric age group

SHANMUGA SUNDARAM M

Abstract

Pigmented villonodularsynovitis is a rare benign proliferative disorder of synovial tissue with unknown etiology which can present as either localized or diffuse form. Though it can  affect all synovial joints, knee joint is most commonly involved. Diagnosis is often delayed or missed due to non specific  presentation of its clinical features. Our case is 10 year old female presenting with swelling and discomfort over left knee. Initially diagnosed as hemangioma knee based on clinical examination and radiological investigations. Patient was  managed by open excision of the lesion through medial  approach. But later turned to be pigmented villonodular synovitis on histological examination of the lesion. Patient had good functional improvement. Though pigmented villonodular synovitis is very rare disorder in children and it should be suspected when patients present with vague symptoms.
