Conjunctival rotational graft as an alternative to conventional autograft after pterygium excision

Shaji S Jaishis .

Abstract

Pterygium is a degenerative condition of          subconjunctival tissue which proliferates as vascularised granulation to invade the cornea and covered by conjunctival epithelium. The treatment of pterygium involves excision and the bare area covered with various materials such as           autoconjunctiva, glue, amniotic membrane graft etc. Here we analyse use of conjunctival rotational autograft versus           conjunctival autograft and their efficacy in a prospective           randomised study performed on 50 eyes of 50 patients with 25 eyes treated with conjunctival rotational autograft and 25 with conventional autograft. Alternate eyes were treated with conjunctival rotational autograft and conventional autograft respectively. Our study showed that rate of recurrence was more common by conventional excision with conjunctival autograft as compared with conjunctival rotational autograft, while complication of graft edema was more common In         conjunctival rotational autograft but resolved on follow up. Suture irritation was equal in both groups. Thus conjunctival autorotational graft is an easily reproducible and well tolerated surgical option for treatment of pterygium
