Abstract

Introduction

Amyloidosis is the extracellular tissue deposition of

fibrils - Low molecular weight subunits of a variety of normal

serum proteins. Amyloidosis involving the urinary tract is rare.

Materials and Methods

This is a single centre retrospective study of biopsy

proven amyloidosis affecting the urinary system (excluding

isolated renal amyloidosis) from January 2005 to August

2016. Clinical presentations, diagnosis and management

were studied and literature was reviewed.

Results

We identified a total of 7 patients, 6 (85.7%) male

and 1 (14.3%) female. Median age at presentation was 56

years. Primary and secondary amyloidosis were present in 2

and 3 patients respectively, it was unknown in 2 patients.

Two patients presented with haematuria and were detected

to have bladder lesions. Three patients had flank pain and

were diagnosed with ureteric strictures -they underwent balloon

dilatation and DJ stenting, two of them also had haematuria

along with bladder lesions. One patient was incidentally

detected to have a ureteric stricture causing hydroureteronephrosis

and a non-functioning kidney that was removed.

Bilateral antegrade DJ stenting was carried out in one patient

with a pelvic mass and obstructive uropathy, he was detected

to have light chain myeloma.
