Evaluation of Shear Bond Strength of Composite Resin to Dentin Treated with a Cross-Linking Agent

Nivedha Karunamurthy .

Abstract

Aim: The aim of the study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of composite resin to dentin treated with a cross-linking agent (Carbodiimide) and universal bonding agent (Solare).

Materials and Methods: Sixty extracted human teeth were flattened on the occlusal surface to expose the dentin. The specimens were divided into 3 groups-Group A-Specimens were treated with universal bonding agent (Solare) without a cross- linking agent (Carbodiimide), Group B-Specimens were treated with a cross- linking agent (Carbodiimide) mixed with universal bonding agent (Solare), Group C-Specimens were treated with separate application of cross-linking agent (Carbodiimide) and universal bonding agent. After the bonding procedure, composite was placed on the specimen and light cured. Shear bond strength was determined using an universal testing machine.

Statistical analysis: Chi square test was used to compare the mode of fractures between groups. One‑way ANOVA with Post hoc Tukey’s HSD test were used to compare the shear bond strength between the groups.

Results: One‑way ANOVA with Post hoc Tukey’s HSD test showed significant difference between the groups. Samples treated with a cross-linking agent (Carbodiimide) mixed with universal bonding agent (Solare) (Group-B) showed increased bond strength.

Conclusion : Dentin bonded with mild self-etch universal bonding agent (Solare) mixed with Carbodiimide(EDC), a cross-linking agent prevents the immediate resin-dentin bond degradation (24 hours).

Keywords: Cross-linking agent, Carbodiimide, Universal bonding agent, Composite, bond strength.
