Abstract

Introduction : Gastro intestinal stromal tumors are rare

neoplasms. They represent 0.1-3% of all gastro

intestinal malignancies. They can arise anywhere along the

gastrointestinal tract. GIST of the small bowel is less

common. Clinically, most of the GIST present as GI bleed

and rarely with intestinal obstruction and perforation. We

report here a case of Ileal GIST presented with Lower

Gastro intestinal bleeding which mimicked as a Recto

sigmoid growth with radiological investigations and been a

diagnostic dilemma, on intraoperatively we found the

tumor growth from Ileum.

Case Report : This is about a 66 years old male patient

who presented with lower abdomen pain and frequent

blood stained stools for 2 months. He was diagnosed as

Recto sigmoid growth and to surprise intraoperatively

diagnosed as Ileal gist of moderate malignant potential,

and resection anastomosis done, followed by imatinib

therapy.

Conclusion : GIST should always be among the

differential diagnosis of an intra-abdominal non-epithelial

malignancy. Radiological Imaging even though advanced

can impede an early diagnosis, as in this case it mimicked

a recto sigmoid exophytic growth.
